Tell us about your career journey at Ambition?
I started out as a consultant on the Professional Services temp and contract desk back in Sept/Oct 2005 and then progressed through the ranks to Senior Consultant. I then went down the Management route and managed the temp team for some time before going off on maternity leave. I then returned to work in a Principal Consultant capacity as I reduced my hours down to 4 days so wanted to focus on billing (rather than management). I have since developed 2 consultants to work alongside me within a temp capacity, both of whom later moved over to permanent roles within Ambition.
What are some of the biggest changes that have happened since you started?
Definitely the merger when we became Ambition in 2008, kicked off with a fantastic launch party at the Gherkin.
Worst candidate you have ever dealt with?
I had a candidate who had good technical experience but struggled with her soft skills. I managed to pitch her in for an urgent temp role (based on her skillset) but asked her to come in for prep – she was very rude to me and was in no way prepared to come in and do interview prep. In fact, she was so appalled that I had even suggested meeting up before her interview that she hung up on me!!
What’s the funniest situation you have been in as a recruitment consultant?
Probably when I had to lend a jacket to a candidate as she had just come over from France. She was really keen to secure a temp role and just couldn’t afford to buy one before the interview. I also offered to prep her offsite for the second time before her interview as she was rather nervous. When I got there she had inappropriate chunky ankle boots on and I ended up lending her a pair of my shoes too! (luckily I had spare flats for myself in my bag!)….the lengths we go to sometimes…and after all that, she still didn’t get the role!
What has been your career highlight so far?
Has to be winning the incentive trip to Dubai in 2015 and being one of the lucky 4 consultants to have an amazing 4 nights staying at the Atlantis, the Palm hotel with our bedroom terrace overlooking the manta ray pool, drinking frozen margaritas on the beach with Scarlette and having an amazing dinner on the last night with all the team at the Burj Al Arab to round it off!
What job would you be doing if you weren’t in recruitment?
I was a roving reporter for a regional radio breakfast show before going into recruitment and was also a professional ‘Riverdance’ member – I’ve hung up my Irish dancing shoes now but as my voice is getting continually more gravelly I’d say I could well have developed more of a ‘voice for radio’ and may hopefully have made it as a studio based presenter by now!! (wishful thinking!)
Tell us something we don’t know about you!
I’ve had a private dinner with Lord Bath (and Boy George) and a couple of our friends in the staff quarters of Longleat house – Boy George covered the visit in his gossip column for a Sunday newspaper the following week and it was all highly entertaining and memorable.
What makes you still want to work at Ambition?
Great people, good atmosphere and a wonderful team!!
