I love my job! So let me tell you all about it. As a Contract Consultant at Ambition Recruitment in Hong Kong I specialise in the recruitment of non-permanent professionals. My entire day revolves around my 56 contractors and the companies they work for solving all their issues and requests that can arise. In general, contractors work through recruitment agencies, so my job is to partner up with them which enables me to understand and manage the quality and level of service provided by the them to the companies who hire them. This allows to me always employ the right contractor for the job every time one is required.
Working within the non-permanent recruitment market really tests my ability to adapt and be flexible with any situation that can occur. On occasions I need to deal with emergency sick leave requests from my contractors. Receiving calls from them at the eleventh hour telling me they are unable to work the next day can be a nightmare for my clients (as the work still needs to get done!) but on a positive side, it challenges me to think on my feet and to always have a backup plan for another contractor to replace them when the unexpected happens.
With so many activities going on, my day as a contract recruitment consultant looks something like this (but no two days are ever the same!).
Wake up, get ready for work, start to write and receive WhatsApp messages, SMS or calls from contractors who are sick or request urgent unplanned leave.
Once all contractor issues have been noted down, I notify the affected companies whom the contractors work for with details of their replacement or the backup plan.
Arrive to work, make sure we have updated any company on the contractor’s leave request and provide onsite company information to the backup contractor
9am – 12pm
Grab a coffee and quick bite, manage and keep record on all contractors’ requests – overtime rate issues, timesheet issues, pension fund questions, tax questions and medical questions. Lots of paperwork!
Continue with my contractor’s requests as well as operational requests from the companies I work on behalf of with renewal issues as well as invoice handling
1pm – 3pm
Lunch time! Attend meetings with the various companies I’m currently working with and review their feedback on their contractors’ performance. Conduct monthly performance review meetings (during lunch time or non-office hours) with contractors to discuss their performance. Follow up on issues with invoices and outstanding timesheets.
3pm – 5pm
Source new contractors who are suitable for positions I am handling, interviewing them either onsite or offsite, meet new and existing companies with recruitment needs, arrange for job seekers to interview with hiring companies, prepare contracts and make business development calls for new positions.
5pm – 7pm
Conduct offsite interviews and performance reviews with my contractors, organise lunch meeting with companies, sign more contracts, renew contracts (contractors may be busy with current job and cannot meet at Ambition office for contract renewal), make phone calls and follow up with candidates that I cannot reach during office hours.
7pm – Finally some dinner time!
And that happens almost every day…
But guess what? Although my schedule is quite demanding, I know I’m making a difference whether it’s changing the lives of a job seeker or helping the companies I deal with build their ultimate dream team it allows me to go home feeling happy and satisfied with what I have achieved every day. So that’s why I love my job!
